These journeys were inspired by a reading in 1962 of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley. It was impossible to duplicate Steinbeck's road trip with his dog Charley during succeeding years due to the responsibilities of family and career. Now in our leisure years, an opportunity for the adventure arrived with the birth and adoption of Colette, an Australian Labradoodle. I suggested to Jan that we could see this great country and take Colette along in a RV. Surprisingly, she embraced the idea.

The hills are alive—with color! Not the green mountaintop Austrian Alps that Julie Andrews sang and traipsed over but our very own southeastern mountaintops. We decided to show Colette the magic that Fall bestows on our hardwood forests. Whether the colors of Fall had peaked or even whether it was a “good year” did not matter. We packed up and departed before a subtropical storm system with high winds and tides thwarted us. And this blog entry will not delve into stories, relating the “adventures” in various state and national parks, mountain towns, and backroad restaurants; it will only serve as an introduction to the photos of Fall.
